NHRC and AccountabilityLab Push for Digital Rights Justice

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and AccountabilityLab Nigeria convened on September 16, 2026, to advocate for stronger inter-agency collaboration in addressing digital rights violations in Nigeria. Chief Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, highlighted the necessity of a coordinated response system to ensure victims can access justice promptly.

The meeting involved representatives from various sectors, including government institutions, civil society organizations, and the media, who discussed existing gaps in addressing rights abuses in the digital space. Ojukwu pointed out that while civil society documents abuses and the media exposes violations, responses often lack coordination, leading to fragmented efforts.

He reaffirmed the NHRC's mandate to investigate human rights violations and facilitate remedies for victims. Ojukwu urged stakeholders to ensure that government actions regarding cybercrime and online harms align with constitutional safeguards and international human rights obligations, referencing the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act of 2024.
