Stand Up Nigeria Calls for Calm Amid Miners' Deaths Probe

A coalition of civil society organizations, spearheaded by Stand Up Nigeria (SUN), has urged Nigerians to remain calm and refrain from disseminating unverified information regarding the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. In a statement from Sunny Attah, the National President of Stand Up Nigeria, the coalition emphasized the importance of allowing the independent investigation ordered by the Federal Government to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Attah expressed concern over the proliferation of unverified reports on social media since the incident became public. The coalition noted that the Federal Government has established an independent committee to investigate the incident, including the identities of the deceased and the circumstances of their deaths.

They also highlighted the suspension of officials connected to the incident as a crucial step towards a credible inquiry. Attah called for transparency in the investigation and accountability for anyone found culpable.
