Niger State Tragedy Sparks Debate on Artisanal Mining

On September 17, 2026, 37 individuals detained on suspicion of illegal mining died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. The Federal Government has initiated an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths and has suspended officers involved in the incident.

A 10-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The tragedy has sparked a call for a broader national dialogue regarding artisanal and small-scale mining in Nigeria.
