Nigeria's Growing Role in Regional Security Leadership

Nigeria is under heightened pressure to assume greater regional leadership responsibilities due to a decline in security cooperation, intensified competition for energy finance, and reduced humanitarian funding. On 14 July, the United Nations Security Council reviewed the political and security situation in West Africa and the Sahel.

The following day, Nigeria’s Permanent Representation to the UN held a discussion on energy access during the UN High-Level Political Forum in New York. Concurrently, the Nigerian federal government and the United Nations initiated a transition towards stronger Nigerian leadership in humanitarian planning.

The Security Council discussion underscored the urgency of regional security challenges, particularly from sophisticated terrorist and criminal networks operating across borders. The reopening of the Kamba border crossing between Nigeria and Niger on 9 February was noted as a positive development, restoring an important commercial route and emphasizing the need for cooperation despite political differences.

Nigeria must navigate its regional responsibilities while upholding democratic principles and ensuring security and trade continuity.
