Nigeria earns $400m from agro exports, imports gulp $10bn annually – FG

Nigeria's agro exports bring in $400 million, while imports cost $10 billion annually, according to the Federal Government. At the FirstBank Nigeria 2025 Agric Export Expo in Lagos, it was revealed that imports include food items like wheat, rice, sugar, fish, and tomato paste.

The Special Adviser to the Minister, Ibrahim Alkali, emphasized the need for financing to boost local exports. Despite agriculture contributing 35% to the GDP and employing 35% of the workforce, Nigeria spends billions on imports.

The government aims to achieve food sovereignty and increase exports, with President Bola Tinubu's administration focusing on agricultural investment. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago reiterated the commitment to driving agricultural investment and urged more financing for farmers.

The event highlighted the benefits of investing in agriculture and the importance of diversifying Nigeria's economy away from oil dependency.
