Nigeria Seeks Climate Finance for Livestock Sector Reform

On June 3, 2026, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, announced Nigeria's intensified efforts to secure global climate finance aimed at transforming the livestock sector. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance food security, create jobs, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

During a meeting with a delegation from the African Group Negotiators and GIZ in Abuja, Maiha emphasized that climate change poses a significant threat to livestock production and rural livelihoods in Nigeria. He noted observable effects of climate change, including declining water availability, changing rainfall patterns, and increased heat stress on livestock.

The ministry is pursuing various strategies, including rehabilitating grazing reserves, expanding fodder cultivation, and adopting renewable energy solutions to promote sustainable livestock production systems. Dr.

David Olufemi Awolala, Director of Technical Services at AGN, informed that the ministry is working on proposals to attract funding from major international climate finance sources, including the Green Climate Fund and the African Development Bank.
