Nigeria Faces Severe Blood Shortage Crisis, Lives at Risk - NBSA Warns

The National Blood Service Agency in Nigeria is facing a critical blood shortage crisis, with only 500,000 units collected annually against the required 1.8 to 2 million units. This deficit of 70-75% poses a significant risk to countless lives, especially affecting emergency trauma care, postpartum hemorrhage, cancer treatment, and other critical areas.

The Director-General, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, highlighted the urgent need for voluntary blood donations to save lives and emphasized the role of the media in reshaping public perceptions.

The shortage has led to hospitals relying on paid donors, endangering patients and compromising the safety of Nigeria's blood supply.
