Nigeria on High Alert for Ebola Virus Threat

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has raised concerns about the potential threat of Ebola virus importation into Nigeria due to ongoing cross-border movement and international travel. Jide Idris, the Director-General of NCDC, stated that the agency's latest risk assessment indicates a significant likelihood of the virus entering Nigeria.

Contributing factors include the continued transmission of the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, as well as the movement of populations and uncertainties surrounding the full-scale outbreak. The NCDC has identified states vulnerable to the virus due to their proximity to borders and major transport routes.

In response, the agency has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and is enhancing its incident management system. Ongoing efforts include surveillance, contact tracing, infection prevention, laboratory testing, and public awareness campaigns to counter misinformation about the disease.
