Nigeria Launches $2bn Digital Economy Research Initiative

On Tuesday, in Abuja, Nigeria launched a $2 billion Digital Economy Research Cluster to enhance innovation within academia. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, aims to bridge the gap in digital infrastructure and foster resilient growth. The project will be financed by the World Bank and will involve universities in a research consortium to deliver high-quality, policy-relevant research across six thematic clusters.

These areas include connectivity, access to digital public infrastructure, government services, skills and human capital, job creation in the digital economy, consumer trust, and the protection of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Dr.

Tijani emphasized the need for Nigeria to develop its own insights rooted in local realities rather than relying on external ideas. Dr.

Tunji Alausa highlighted the importance of evolving Nigerian universities beyond theoretical learning to nurture innovative entrepreneurs capable of solving problems and competing globally. The initiative is expected to transform lives and contribute to the global digital economy.
