Nigeria's $500M Cybercrime Loss in 2022, Says EFCC Chairman

Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), announced that Nigeria lost over $500 million to cybercriminal activities in 2022. This statement was made during a visit from Uzoma Nwagba, the Managing Director of the Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORPS), at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Olukoyede attributed the increasing trend of cybercrime among young Nigerians to poverty and limited educational opportunities, emphasizing that many young offenders express a desire to pursue education but lack the financial means. He introduced the concept of the NELFund, aimed at providing support for educational opportunities.

Additionally, he addressed the reasons behind corrupt practices among public servants, citing inadequate earnings that fail to meet basic needs such as housing, transportation, education, and child feeding. He suggested that access to affordable mortgages and long-term consumer loans could alleviate the pressure that drives individuals towards illicit wealth acquisition.
