Akume Calls for Electoral Credibility to Strengthen Democracy

During a public lecture held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, stressed the importance of fixing electoral credibility to strengthen Nigeria's democracy. Speaking on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Akume urged citizens to play an active role in reinforcing democratic institutions and safeguarding civil rule, reflecting on Nigeria's 27-year democratic journey since 1999.

He noted the country's achievement of conducting eight consecutive general elections and the peaceful transition of power across political parties, including a historic handover from one opposition party to another. However, Akume warned that issues such as corruption within the electoral process and persistent ethnic and religious divisions threaten public trust and national cohesion.

He called for a critical assessment of democratic institutions to ensure they continue to reflect the aspirations of the people, emphasizing that democracy is worth defending and requires sacrifices for future generations.
