Oyakhire Advocates for Selfless Leaders in Nigeria

Prince Amen Oyakhire, the former Military Administrator of Oyo and Taraba states, asserted that Nigeria's democratic future is contingent upon the election of selfless, competent, and patriotic leaders through free, fair, and transparent elections. In a statement made on Friday, he emphasized that overcoming governance challenges requires allowing citizens to choose leaders who prioritize public service over personal interests.

Oyakhire criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming it has faced credibility challenges since the return to democratic rule in 1999, which has weakened public confidence in the electoral process. He noted that past elections were marred by allegations of irregularities, violence, and voter disenfranchisement, leading to disputes resolved by election tribunals.

He proposed that future INEC chairpersons should be retired Supreme Court justices with proven integrity to enhance public trust. Oyakhire called for political leaders to prioritize the welfare and security of Nigerians and advocated for stronger democratic institutions and an active citizenry to safeguard democracy.
