NDDC Trains Traditional Birth Attendants to Save Lives

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has committed to supporting the Federal Government’s Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative by training traditional birth attendants to reduce preventable deaths among mothers and newborns. This commitment was announced during a workshop held in Delta and Bayelsa states, where participants were educated on safe maternal and newborn care.

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the NDDC, emphasized the alarming rates of maternal and child deaths and the need for awareness and training.

The workshop aimed to equip traditional birth attendants with skills for early detection of complications and referral of high-risk cases. Dr.

Patience Ezugu, Director of Education, Health and Social Services at the NDDC, noted that over 300 women participated and received medical equipment and cash support. Resource person Mrs.

Gift Akitiri stressed the importance of continuous capacity building for traditional birth attendants. Participant Mrs.

Franscica Odiakosa praised the training for enhancing her understanding of maternal healthcare.
