Shettima Calls on Nigerians Abroad to Invest in Economy

On September 24, Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed Nigerians living abroad in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, urging them to actively participate in Nigeria's economic transformation. He called on the Diaspora to invest capital, transfer expertise, and promote Nigeria's interests globally.

Shettima described the Diaspora as “the greatest resource of the future,” highlighting their potential to contribute to national development. He defended the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, which has been in office since May 2023, noting that the President chose to confront economic challenges directly rather than blame his predecessor.

Key reforms include the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange regime, which have significantly impacted petrol pricing and the foreign exchange market. Shettima reported that Nigeria's foreign reserves increased from $3.9 billion to over $55 billion, and the economy experienced a growth rate of 4.45 percent in the latest quarter.
