Nigeria has been ranked second among countries that will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a disappointing qualification campaign. The Super Eagles are currently placed 26th in the latest FIFA men's world rankings.

Denmark ranks 21st globally, sitting higher among nations that failed to qualify for the tournament, which will feature 48 nations for the first time. John Terry, a Chelsea legend, expressed his disappointment during a virtual roundtable session organized by SuperSport, stating that Nigeria's absence is significant and that the team has the potential to progress further in the competition.

Nigeria's hopes were kept alive during the playoffs after a semi-final victory against Gabon, but they ultimately fell to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a penalty shootout during the final playoff. The Nigeria Football Federation faced challenges during the qualification campaign, including an appeal regarding player eligibility that was dismissed.

Nigeria remains Africa's third-highest ranked team, behind Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, and Egypt.
