Nigeria Achieves First Robotic Fibroid Surgery in West Africa

Nigeria has recorded a historic achievement by conducting West Africa's first robotic-assisted fibroid surgery at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja. The surgery was performed by a team led by UK-trained gynecologist Dr.

Ahm Abdullahi, who hails from Adamawa State. The procedure utilized the MicroPort Toumai MT 1000 robotic system, enhancing precision and visualization during the complex surgical process.

The patient, a 22-year-old woman diagnosed with uterine fibroids, underwent robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy. Dr.

Abdullahi noted that the robotic technology allowed the surgical team to operate through tiny incisions, significantly reducing tissue trauma and post-operative discomfort. The procedure recorded minimal blood loss, requiring no blood transfusions, and the patient was discharged within hours.

This advancement represents a significant improvement over conventional open procedures and is a breakthrough achieved through collaboration between Nisa Premier Hospital and Robom Global, aimed at promoting technology transfer and strengthening local capacity in robotic surgery.
