Nigeria Diversifies Defense Partnerships Beyond U.S.

Nigeria is actively seeking to reduce its dependence on the United States for defense by exploring partnerships with Turkey and other nations. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is focusing on diversifying its foreign security partnerships in response to ongoing security challenges, including insurgency in the North East, farmer-herder clashes in the North Central region, separatist violence in the South East, and escalating banditry in the North West.

During a visit to Brussels, Tinubu's government discussed deepening collaboration with the European Union to strengthen regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts. Tinubu has requested U.S. helicopters and German support for intelligence and reconnaissance operations in the Sahel.

The EU has expressed its commitment to enhancing security and defense cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in the North West, while respecting national sovereignty. Tinubu's state visit to Turkey in January is expected to include discussions on military equipment supply and joint local production arrangements.
