Nigeria Aims to Become Africa's Healthcare Manufacturing Hub

Nigeria is positioning itself as a leading healthcare manufacturing hub in Africa, as stated by the Federal Government. Dr.

Abdu Mukhtar announced a new strategic partnership aimed at reducing reliance on foreign medical imports and securing the country's healthcare future. This initiative includes the groundbreaking ceremony for a local manufacturing facility by Abbott and Afrimed in Ogun State, which will produce rapid diagnostic tests for diseases such as malaria and HIV.

The project is seen as a major milestone in strengthening health security and expanding access to quality healthcare products across the continent. The Federal Government has committed to supporting local manufacturing through policies that include zero duties and zero VAT on selected raw materials and equipment.

This collaboration is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost of delivering critical diagnostic tests not only within Nigeria but also across the entire West African sub-region. The construction of the facility is underway and is projected to create hundreds of skilled domestic jobs.
