Nigeria's Food Import Bill Hits N3.30 Trillion in H1 2026

In the first half of 2026, Nigeria's expenditure on food and beverage imports reached N3.30 trillion, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This figure includes N1.39 trillion in Q1 and N1.91 trillion in Q2, marking a 3.1% decrease from N3.40 trillion spent in the same period in 2025.

The breakdown shows that primary food and beverage imports accounted for N1.58 trillion, with N634.05 billion in Q1 and N948.42 billion in Q2. Processed products for industry totaled N780.42 billion, while household consumption imports were N934.78 billion.

The increase in Q2 reflects a rise in both primary and processed food products, particularly for household consumption. The rising import bill raises concerns over food affordability and supply, highlighting Nigeria's food security challenges.

In response, the Federal Government has introduced new agricultural initiatives, including a new chicken breed and 57 crop varieties, aimed at boosting food production and improving nutrition for Nigerians.
