Nigeria and Switzerland Agree on Return of Benin Artefacts

Nigeria and Switzerland have deepened their bilateral relations, culminating in an agreement on the return of Benin artefacts taken during the 1897 expedition. The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting in Abuja, hosted by Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and attended by Switzerland's Foreign Minister, Ignazio Cassis.

Tuggar described the agreement as a significant step toward justice and cultural restoration, highlighting the importance of recognizing historical identity. Cassis reaffirmed Switzerland's commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria across multiple sectors, including economic development, security cooperation, and migration management.

Both countries agreed to boost trade and investment, encourage private sector partnerships, enhance cooperation to tackle transnational crime, and promote safe and orderly migration. This engagement is expected to further strengthen diplomatic relations and advance cultural restitution efforts between Nigeria and Switzerland.
