Nigeria Aims for 100,000 Affordable Housing Units Nationwide

The Nigerian Government has set a target to deliver 100,000 affordable housing units across the country, as announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Darma, during the joint commemoration of the 2026 World Habitat Day and World Cities Day in Abuja. Represented by Chief of Staff Dr Abba Yakubu, Darma noted that over 240 urban renewal and slum-upgrading projects have been completed, with more than 100 currently underway.
The government is implementing reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to enhance access to decent housing and improve urban infrastructure. Challenges such as high interest rates and low mortgage penetration hinder homeownership, prompting the ministry to strengthen housing finance institutions and promote public-private partnerships.
The Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Atta, emphasized collaboration with various stakeholders to expedite affordable housing delivery. The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria financed 6,911 affordable housing units in 2025 and plans to introduce non-interest mortgage products and rent assistance schemes by the end of October.
