Nigeria Leads Africa in Spam Calls, Truecaller Reports

According to a report by Truecaller, Nigeria has been identified as the most spammed country in Africa, with 51% of unknown calls received in 2025 categorized as spam. This places Nigeria eighth globally, surpassing other African nations such as South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Ethiopia.

The report attributes the high volume of spam calls in Nigeria to telecom-related issues, with 35% of spam calls falling under this category. Additionally, 10% of calls are identified as scams.

Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala emphasized the challenges Nigerians face in distinguishing legitimate telecom service calls from fraudulent attempts, particularly those impersonating trusted operators. The report also notes that Indonesia ranks first globally with 79% of unknown calls flagged as spam, followed by Chile with 70%.

The trend of automated and unverifiable calls is increasingly dominating communication systems, especially in regions like South America and Southeast Asia. Truecaller disclosed that it surpassed 500 million monthly active users globally as of March 2026, indicating significant growth outside India.
