The Nigerian government has committed to advancing its fiscal reporting systems and budget accountability measures, building on a positive evaluation from the International Monetary Fund. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele made the announcement after the IMF completed its 2026 Article IV mission review of Nigeria's economy, which commended the country's reform trajectory under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

The IMF assessment validated the structural changes Nigeria has implemented over the past three years, noting improvements in macroeconomic stability and the strengthening of fiscal revenue collection. The multilateral institution acknowledged that Nigeria has demonstrated resilience in managing its economy despite external pressures from global economic conditions.

In response to the review, Oyedele outlined plans to enhance the quality of fiscal data across government institutions, improve coordination between different agencies handling public finances, and increase transparency in budget processes. The minister indicated that the government had already begun implementing recommendations from previous IMF consultations, particularly those relating to data reconciliation and fiscal reporting standards.

The IMF's report also highlighted persistent challenges including poverty levels and food insecurity within Nigeria, underscoring that economic reform efforts must address these underlying development issues. Oyedele characterised the positive assessment as independent validation of the administration's policy direction and said it would serve as a foundation for sustaining inclusive economic expansion.
