Nigerian Airlines Seek Tinubu's Help Over Rising Costs

Allen Onyema, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, disclosed that Nigerian airlines are requesting a meeting with President Bola Tinubu to address the challenges posed by multiple taxes and regulatory charges that are escalating operational costs. During an interview on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Onyema highlighted that the aviation sector is facing severe challenges, including high aviation fuel prices and expensive loans, which are exacerbated by global tensions affecting fuel costs.

He noted that no Nigerian airline has been profitable, with many borrowing billions just to maintain operations. Onyema criticized the five percent ticket sale charge imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), arguing that it unfairly burdens airlines without providing them any gain.

He called for the establishment of an aviation tax charge review committee to reassess these levies to prevent further collapses within the industry. Onyema warned that failure to address these issues could lead to significant economic consequences, including massive job losses and financial risks for banks providing loans to airlines.
