Nigerian Financial Firms Post Mixed Profit Results in First Nine Months of 2026

Banks and investment companies report varying performance, with some seeing double-digit growth while others face revenue headwinds during the nine-month period.

Financial institutions operating in Nigeria delivered uneven results for the nine months ending September 2026, with investment-focused firms outpacing traditional lenders in profit expansion. United Capital Plc led the gainers with earnings climbing two-thirds higher to N41.58 billion, buoyed by a near-doubling of investment returns.

Afreximbank similarly demonstrated strength, with net income jumping 24 percent to $813.5 million as lending activity and interest margins strengthened. At the other end, Transcorp saw both revenue and profit contract, with earnings dropping just over 10 percent to N111.39 billion as its power and hospitality divisions contributed less to the bottom line.

Mortgage and hospitality operators showed modest momentum. Infinity Trust Mortgage Bank grew pre-tax profit by nearly 27 percent to N2.76 billion, riding a 41.51 percent surge in turnover that reflected stronger returns from lending operations.

Ikeja Hotel expanded earnings 15 percent to N8.19 billion despite a comparatively slower revenue growth of 4.84 percent, indicating improved cost management or margin compression across the sector. Transcorp's slide reflects broader sectoral challenges.

The conglomerate's nine-month revenue fell 13.35 percent to N357.38 billion as both its power and hospitality businesses generated lower returns. While the company benefited from reduced finance expenses and improved impairment charge movements, these gains could not offset the revenue pressure.

Profit after tax fell even more sharply, declining 17.85 percent to N75.09 billion. The divergent performance underscores different market dynamics facing Nigerian financial firms.

Investment and mortgage lenders leveraging higher interest rates and asset price volatility capitalised on market conditions, while diversified conglomerates faced operational headwinds in specific sectors. Afreximbank's dollar-denominated earnings of $813.5 million and United Capital's N34.83 billion after-tax profit represent the strongest results among the firms surveyed.
