Nigerian firms report double-digit profit growth in first nine months of 2026

MeCure, NEM Insurance, VFD Group and Sterling Financial all posted substantial pre-tax profit increases for 9M 2026, though Ecobank showed minimal gains.

Five major Nigerian corporations listed on exchanges released their unaudited financial statements for the nine months through 2026, with most registering notable profitability expansion versus year-earlier comparisons. The industrial, insurance, financial services and banking sectors all demonstrated resilience, though with varying growth rates and underlying drivers.

MeCure Industries Plc lifted its pre-tax profit to N8.64 billion, representing gains of 35.71%, as revenue climbed 17.05% and marketing expenses dropped substantially. NEM Insurance Plc delivered particularly impressive performance within the insurance space, pushing pre-tax profit 30.54% higher to N31.02 billion.

The insurer's nine-month earnings surpassed its entire 2025 annual profit of N27.98 billion. VFD Group recorded the steepest percentage climb among the five, with pre-tax profit soaring 91.86% to N15.34 billion.

Sterling Financial Holdings added to the narrative with pre-tax profit reaching N97.28 billion, a 37.09% jump bolstered by heightened interest income and diversified operating revenue. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated presented a contrasting picture within this cohort of five.

The banking titan's pre-tax profit edged down 0.41% to N1.01 trillion, with revenue declining 0.61% to N2.69 trillion when denominated in naira. Shareholders' profit nonetheless gained 0.71%, touching N707.40 billion, signalling either stricter cost management or tax efficiency despite revenue headwinds.

Different sectoral environments explain this performance spectrum. Companies achieving double-digit profit advances cited expanded investment income, reduced operating outlays, and stronger operational results from banking or insurance divisions.

Filings submitted to the Nigerian Exchange in late October 2026 containing these unaudited figures supply market observers with early visibility into corporate trajectories as the year advanced.
