Nigerian Scientists Innovate Medical Imaging Device in UK

A team of Nigerian scientists has secured recognition from the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) for their innovative medical imaging device, registered under design number 6482043 on November 18, 2025. This device aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of optical diagnostic systems by integrating self-calibrating mechanisms.

The interdisciplinary team includes Prof. Okechukwu Erondu from Gregory University Uturu, Prof.

Terver Sombo, and Dr. Peverga Jubu, who collaborated to develop this technology.

The device addresses longstanding challenges in maintaining accurate calibration, which has historically compromised image quality and diagnostic reliability. The newly registered device allows for continuous alignment during operation, enabling real-time monitoring and optimization of optical alignment without the need for repeated manual adjustments.

This innovation has potential applications in various fields, including biomedical imaging and fluorescence diagnostics, and is expected to enhance operational efficiency in clinical laboratories.
