EFCC Boss Urges AI Adoption in Nigerian Universities

On Tuesday, Ayo Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), addressed the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities in Nigeria, held in Kano. He urged Nigerian universities to urgently adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in their financial management systems to curb corruption and improve accountability.

Olukoyede highlighted that universities manage substantial resources, including tuition fees and research grants, yet continue to face significant financial integrity challenges. He disclosed that the EFCC is currently investigating several corruption cases involving tertiary institutions nationwide.

Olukoyede outlined key areas where AI could enhance ethical financial management, such as fraud detection and automated audits. He also called for stronger collaboration between universities and the EFCC, including joint training programs.

While advocating for the adoption of an AI code of ethics, he cautioned against over-reliance on technology, which could undermine professional judgment and institutional autonomy.
