Nigerian Woman Charged for Illegal Voting in US Elections

Gladys Adaeze Okafor, a 56-year-old Nigerian woman living in Lynn, Massachusetts, has been arrested and charged by the US Department of Justice for allegedly falsely claiming US citizenship and unlawfully voting in elections. The charges were announced on September 16.
Okafor, who was born in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria, is a Nigerian citizen and obtained lawful permanent resident status in December 2022. However, she is not a US citizen.
Prosecutors allege that she registered to vote in July 2022, prior to obtaining her permanent residency, and signed a declaration affirming her citizenship under penalty of perjury. Following her registration, Okafor allegedly voted in the 2022 US midterm elections.
The investigation into her conduct began before she received her permanent residency status.
