NIDCOM Urges Action as Attacks on Nigerians Surge in SA

The Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has expressed grave concern over the rising attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, warning that the situation appears to be worsening despite previous diplomatic engagements. In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, signed by NIDCOM's chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reports indicate that families are under pressure, with children of Nigerian descent afraid to attend school and business owners hesitant to open shops due to fears of attacks and looting.

The statement highlighted incidents of harassment and intimidation recorded within the last 72 hours, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals. NIDCOM has called on South African authorities to take immediate visible steps to secure affected communities and protect residents, emphasizing the legal and moral responsibility to treat individuals based on their actions rather than generalizing.

The commission has urged for increased police presence in high-risk areas, swift arrests, and the creation of a joint safety platform involving government officials, law enforcement, and diaspora leaders. NIDCOM has already engaged with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate in Johannesburg to monitor the situation and ensure the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad.
