Tinubu Launches $1 Billion Social Protection Initiative

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated the $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme, part of a larger $3 billion strategy to address poverty, healthcare, education, skills, and household resilience in Nigeria. This programme includes the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project—HOPE-SP, valued at approximately N1.4 trillion.

The administration has resumed traceable cash transfers, expanded identity-linked verification, and continued reforming the National Social Register. Additionally, the National Economic Council endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026–2030.

The One-Humanitarian-One-Poverty Response System aims to connect humanitarian assistance with poverty reduction and household data, reducing duplicated interventions and tracking family progress towards stability. President Tinubu's reforms are crucial as he inherited an economy burdened by petrol subsidies, foreign-exchange distortions, weak revenues, and debt-service obligations, with the goal of ensuring that economic growth benefits all households, not just reflected in national statistics.
