Nigeria Sees Decline in HIV Cases Amid New Treatment

Between January and April 2026, Nigeria experienced a steady decline in HIV cases, dropping from 8,494 in January to 6,458 in April. This decrease is believed to be linked to the introduction of lenacapavir, a new injectable HIV prevention method administered biannually.

The federal government initiated a program targeting eight states, including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory. The first shipment of lenacapavir was received on March 10, 2026, with 52,000 doses secured for rollout.

So far, 11,520 doses have been delivered. The Federal Minister of Health and Social Welfare announced this development as a significant step in Nigeria's efforts to combat HIV as a public health threat, enhancing the country's capacity to provide sustained protection for individuals at risk of HIV infection.
