NIMASA Pledges Increased Monitoring, Enforcement On Vessels Over Marine Pollution

Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has pledged to increase monitoring and enforcement on vessels to prevent marine pollution in Nigerian waters. Dr.

Dayo Mobereola, of NIMASA, emphasized the need for both indigenous and foreign shipping companies to comply with international environmental obligations, specifically the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI. This convention has been domesticated in Nigeria through the Merchant Shipping Act 2007.

NIMASA is committed to safeguarding Nigeria's marine environment and ensuring that vessels align with global best practices for safety, security, and environmental protection. The agency issued a Marine Notice to guide shipowners, charterers, and shipping companies on their obligations to prevent air pollution from ships.

Mobereola stressed that NIMASA will not compromise on international standards and will continue to encourage shipping business in Nigeria to adhere to these regulations.
