Essential Travel Tips for Nigerians in the US

Nigerians living in the United States, particularly Green Card holders and other immigrants, face important considerations when traveling home to Nigeria. The U.S.

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) states that permanent residents can travel abroad and return, provided their trip is temporary and they have not abandoned their permanent residence. While there is no strict rule that a Green Card becomes invalid after six months abroad, longer absences can lead to scrutiny regarding the individual's permanent home status.

An absence of one year or more can create significant issues, especially if a re-entry permit was not obtained prior to leaving. Permanent residents must file Form I-131 while in the U.S. to apply for a re-entry permit, which is valid for up to two years.

However, if a resident has spent more than four of the previous five years outside the U.S., the validity may be limited to one year. Maintaining genuine ties to the U.S. is crucial for re-entry.
