Nnimmo Bassey Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, the Executive Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Environmental and Climate Justice at the 2026 Courageous Scientists Awards on October 13, 2026. The award was presented by the Forum for Eco-Social Transformations (FEST) in Vienna, Austria, in recognition of Bassey's decades-long advocacy for environmental protection and support for affected communities.

He received this honor alongside the late Berta Cáceres, a renowned environmental and Indigenous rights activist from Honduras. In his acceptance speech, Bassey emphasized the importance of ethical, community-centered science and the need for accountability regarding environmental destruction.

He called for respect for the rights of communities impacted by extractive activities and urged for remediation in areas affected by colonial extraction and ecocide. The award has garnered praise from various environmental organizations, with leaders like Akinbode Oluwafemi and Mariann Bassey-Olsson commending Bassey's commitment to grassroots advocacy and environmental justice.
