NNPC Extends Petrol Discount to October 31, Funded From Retail Margin

NNPC has extended its N66-per-litre petrol discount through October 31, with the FG clarifying the relief comes from the company's own margin, not public funds.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has prolonged a temporary reduction in petrol prices at its retail stations until the end of October 2026, according to a statement from the company's chief communications officer Andy Odeh. The discount, initially launched as part of Nigeria's 66th Independence Day celebration on October 1, reduces the price of fuel by 66 naira per litre for customers who purchase through the NNPC Fuel App at participating stations.
The Federal Government moved quickly to address public perception about the initiative, with Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele releasing a statement clarifying that the price reduction does not represent a return to fuel subsidies. Instead, Oyedele explained, NNPC Retail is absorbing the entire cost of the discount from its own profit margins.
The company purchases petrol from suppliers including the Dangote Refinery at market rates, then adds a markup to set pump prices: the discount originates entirely from that markup structure. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that no funds from the Federation Account or the federal budget are being used to support the initiative.
This distinction carries weight in Nigeria, where fuel subsidies historically placed heavy strain on government finances and became a point of political contention. NNPC's framing of the measure as customer relief rather than subsidy reflects this sensitivity.
The discount applies only to purchases made through the NNPC mobile application at designated NNPC Retail locations. The company has positioned the initiative as a temporary response to elevated global crude oil prices, which have been influenced by Middle East tensions.
The October 31 end date suggests the promotion remains time-limited, though NNPC has not indicated whether it will be extended further beyond that deadline.
