NPMA Seeks Government Compensation After Lagos Market Fire

The National Progressive Market Association (NPMA), representing 58 markets across Lagos State, has formally appealed to the Nigerian government for urgent financial compensation following a significant fire outbreak at Balogun Market on December 24, 2025. The fire led to the demolition of market structures, severely impacting traders' livelihoods.

In a letter addressed to relevant authorities, NPMA President Comrade Chinedu Ukatu emphasized the devastating consequences of the fire, leaving families without sources of income. The association urged government authorities to provide prompt financial assistance and relief measures to help victims recover and rebuild their enterprises.

They also requested that the federal government extend adequate support, including monetary compensation, to enable affected traders to restore their businesses. Furthermore, Ukatu commended the Lagos State Government for its ongoing efforts and called for expedited actions to allow traders to resume commercial activities as soon as possible.
