NPO Applauds Tinubu's Probe into Big Tech Practices

The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for instructing the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major global technology companies and artificial intelligence platforms for alleged anti-competitive practices that exploit Nigerian media content. This directive is seen as a significant milestone in efforts to protect Nigeria's media industry and address unfair commercial practices dominating digital platforms.

The NPO's commendation follows a joint petition submitted to the federal government by various media associations, including the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). The petition raised concerns about the threats posed by global technology companies and AI platforms operating in Nigeria.

The NPO described the investigation as a first major step toward holding these companies accountable and welcomed assurances from FCCPC's Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, regarding an independent and transparent inquiry. The NPO pledged full cooperation with the FCCPC throughout the investigation.
