NSIB Recovers Flight Recorders From Delta Roadway Landing Aircraft

Nigeria's aviation safety bureau retrieved black boxes from a Bombardier jet that landed on a road near Asaba on June 10, launching a full investigation.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has secured the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from a Bombardier Challenger CL 601 aircraft following an unusual landing incident in Delta State. The plane, registered as N989BC and operated by VMO Aero Limited, touched down on a roadway during a flight from Lagos to Asaba on June 10, 2026, before departing the same location.

NSIB activated emergency response protocols immediately after receiving notification of the occurrence. An investigative team was deployed to the scene near Asaba to begin the formal inquiry. The recovery of both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder represents a critical step in establishing what led to the aircraft's unconventional landing.

Director-General of NSIB Captain Alex Badeh Jr. confirmed that the bureau moved swiftly following the June 10 incident. The agency's spokesperson, Mr. Funk Adebayo Arowojobe, issued statements on Thursday outlining the recovery operation. Family assistance measures have been coordinated by the bureau's department of public affairs.

The retrieved recorders will form the foundation of NSIB's investigation into the circumstances surrounding the roadway landing. These devices typically contain audio records of crew communications and technical flight parameters, both essential for accident and incident investigation. The inquiry will determine the factors that led the aircraft to deviate from standard landing procedures on that date.
