NUC Begins Review Of Private Varsity Regulations

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has initiated a review of the regulations governing the establishment of private universities in Nigeria. The six-month moratorium on new applications, announced in February 2025, aims to align standards with national development goals.

The review will address emerging realities in university operations and ensure compliance with set standards. The committee, chaired by Malam Ashafa Ladan, will assess existing guidelines, financial support mechanisms, and academic activity commencement rules.

The committee, inaugurated by NUC's Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, is expected to submit a comprehensive report by August 29, 2025. The NUC emphasized the importance of the review in meeting societal needs and enhancing the quality of private university education in Nigeria.

Stakeholders will be informed of the new regulatory framework before the moratorium ends in February 2026.
