Obi Critiques Tinubu on Debt Amid Revenue Growth Claims

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a member of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, has criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration regarding the rising national debt, which he claims has escalated despite the government's assertions of revenue growth. In a statement posted on his official page, Obi responded to Tinubu's recent review of his administration's performance over the past three years, where Tinubu noted an increase in government revenue from N16.8 trillion in 2022 to a projected N35 trillion in 2025.

However, Obi argued that Nigeria's total public debt has risen to N200 trillion, an increase of N100 trillion within the last three years. He pointed out that despite the revenue growth, socio-economic indicators have worsened, with multidimensional poverty rising to 87 million people in 2023 and projected to reach 140 million by 2025.

Obi called for stronger transparency and accountability in the management of public funds and urged the government to provide clear accounts of how borrowed funds are spent.
