Obidi Movement Threatens Protests Over Senate's Rejection of Real-Time Election Result Transmission

The Obidi Movement Worldwide has issued a statement threatening mass protests against the Nigerian Senate's decision to reject the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results. The group's coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, condemned the Senate's rejection of the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, which sought to make electronic transmission compulsory.

The Senate, led by Senate President Godswil Akpabio, retained the existing provision in the Electoral Act, allowing for manual collation of results. Tanko criticized the Senate's decision, describing it as a setback to electoral reform and a threat to democratic governance.

The Obidi Movement called for a peaceful march to the National Assembly to demand a reconsideration of the critical issue and the immediate passage of a law mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results through INEC's irev portal. Tanko accused the political leadership of prioritizing elite interests over democratic values and called for urgent legislative intervention to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
