Ohoba Community Faces Leadership Crisis and Unrest

The Ohoba Community, located in the Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, is rich in cultural heritage and natural resources, particularly hydrocarbon deposits. Despite its wealth, the community suffers from economic exploitation and marginalization, lacking basic infrastructure such as reliable electricity and potable water.

Leadership disputes and civil unrest have emerged, particularly surrounding the traditional chieftaincy, with HRH Ez Philip Nwaka Anyanwu, who reigned from 1976 until his death in March 2024, at the center of a succession crisis. Youth protests have intensified due to stalled infrastructure projects, notably the Assa-Ohoba-Obosima road, which remains incomplete since a memorandum of understanding with oil companies in 2019.

The community's frustrations culminated in violence, including a tragic incident on November 18, 2025, resulting in the death of Mr. Onyewuchi Awlotu and injuries to others.

This unrest reflects broader issues of governance, resource distribution, and the need for community trust in Imo State.
