Nigerian Senate Limits Presidential Contest to Returning Senators

The Nigerian Senate has made a significant amendment to its rules, stipulating that only returning senators can contest for the presidency. This decision was reached during a closed-door meeting held on Tuesday.

The new guidelines are designed to uphold order and ensure that leadership positions are occupied by lawmakers with adequate experience. Under the revised rules, senators who have completed two terms will be eligible to run for top leadership positions.

The nomination process will strictly follow a ranking system, prioritizing former Senate presidents, followed by former deputy Senate presidents, and then other principal officers who have served at least one full term. Additionally, senators serving in the 10th Assembly who win re-election to the 11th Senate will be eligible to contest for the Senate presidency.

This change aims to maintain existing order within the legislative body.
