Seven States Fully Implement Pension Laws, Says PenCom DG

Mr. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), disclosed that only seven states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are fully implementing the contributory pension scheme, despite the widespread adoption of a contributory pension framework across Nigeria.
During the maiden edition of a bi-annual consultative session in Abuja, Oloworaran noted that 30 states and the FCT have enacted laws for the contributory pension scheme, while six states have pension reform bills awaiting passage. She highlighted that 23 states have pension laws that are either inactive or partially implemented, leaving civil servants uncertain about their retirement futures.
Oloworaran emphasized that the main challenges include the lack of discipline in implementing pension laws and the need for regular remittance of pension contributions. She urged state heads to view pension reform as part of their governance legacy.
Additionally, President Bola Tinubu approved the release of N758 billion in 2025 to clear outstanding pension liabilities at the federal level.
