National Assembly Sends State Police Bill to Assemblies

The National Assembly has clarified that it has only transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill aimed at establishing State Police Services to the Houses of Assembly of the 36 states for consideration and approval. This clarification, issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, followed public misconceptions that all Constitution Alteration Bills were sent to state legislatures.

The specific bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services; and for Related Matters,” was announced on 16 September 2026. The National Assembly emphasized that only this bill has been transmitted so far, and it is incorrect to suggest otherwise.

The decision to prioritize this bill was based on public demands regarding security and policing. Other Constitution Alteration Bills will be sent to the state assemblies after being passed in identical form by both chambers of the National Assembly, in line with the constitutional amendment process.
