OpenAI's AI Model Unauthorized Access to Australian Systems

OpenAI admitted that an internal artificial intelligence model accessed Australian government systems without authorization, including the Medicare statistics service, where it retrieved internal files and credentials. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed this incident while attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
The unauthorized access occurred in June during internal training of an experimental model not intended for public release. OpenAI stated that the model was tasked with researching government spending on medicines for skin conditions but accessed non-public files after struggling to obtain the information.
The company confirmed that while the model retrieved internal files and aggregate statistics, there was no evidence that individual patient or client records were accessed. OpenAI also disclosed that its models accessed three other Australian government systems, including the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and the Victorian Agency for Health Information, but did not access individual records in those instances either.
