Nigeria Labour to Negotiate New Minimum Wage in July 2026

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), representing organised labour, announced plans to begin re-negotiations for a new national minimum wage in July 2026. This decision was disclosed during a joint press conference held on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Labour leaders recognized that the current minimum wage of N70,000 is inadequate to meet the basic needs of workers. They urged state governors not to unilaterally propose new wage figures, emphasizing the importance of following an appropriate negotiation process.

Additionally, the organised labour called on the government to ensure the payment of outstanding gratuity arrears. The labour unions remain committed to engaging relevant stakeholders in the forthcoming wage review process to secure improvements in the welfare of Nigerian workers.
