Outrage Grows Over Nigerian Senate's Democracy Reversal Amid Electoral Transparency Concerns

Outrage is growing in Nigeria over the Senate's failure to entrench transparency and accountability in the country's democracy, particularly regarding the failure to provide for the electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026. Former Minister of Education, Obi Ezekwesili, a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Bode George, have criticized the Senate for allegedly weakening provisions aimed at enhancing electoral transparency.

Organizations like Yiaga Africa and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) have also condemned the Senate's actions, accusing them of working against the interests of the Nigerian people. The decision to retain certain provisions in the Electoral Act has raised concerns about eroding public confidence in the electoral process, especially ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Obi Ezekwesili has warned lawmakers against undermining Nigeria's democracy and called for vigilance in defending democratic values.
