Nigeria Reports Over 3.67M IDPs and 140K Asylum Seekers

As of September 1, 3,679,757 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are living in various camps and host communities across Nigeria, according to Aliyu Ahmed, Federal Commissioner/CEO of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMIDP). This information was disclosed during the National Multi-Stakeholder Policy Dialogue held in Abuja, organized by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International Nigeria, with support from the Government of Ireland.
The event focused on strengthening human rights-centered and gender-responsive approaches to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nigeria's defense and security operations. Additionally, Nigeria is hosting 140,927 refugees and asylum seekers from various countries.
Stakeholders at the dialogue, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, called for improved institutional safeguards and accountability systems to combat SGBV. Auwal Ibrahim Rafsanjani, CISLAC Executive Director, stressed the importance of protecting human rights and ensuring effective reporting mechanisms for survivors.
